BlackBerry Basics: How to Optimize Your BlackBerry’s Memory and Speed
If you have one of the new OS 7 handsets, processor speed and memory space are probably not that big of an issue. But if you still have one of the good, classic BlackBerry smartphones like the Curve 3G and the Bold OS 6 devices, this is definitely something you’d like to know to boost your phone’s performance.
Before we list down some of the applications that you can download to clear up your device’s memory, let’s first look at some tricks that you can do:
1. Alt + LGLG : Your BlackBerry “logs in” everything that you do on the phone, which could take some space in your Berry’s memory. Clearing the log notes of the handset can help improve its clock speed, which can help in boosting navigation and performance.
How to do: While on standby mode, follow the combination by holding down the ALT key and then pressing the letters L G L G; this will show the events log. Click the menu (BlackBerry symbol), scroll down to Clear All and then press. This will delete the log notes on that screen.
If doing the Alt + LGLG combination bores you, there’s in fact a way of stopping the Berry from storing events log altogether. Going back to the process, after pressing the Clear All option, don’t exit out of the screen yet. Click the Menu key again and select Options. Set the Min Log Level to WARNING. Press the Menu key again and select Options. Now, uncheck all the tick boxes, then press Save and then Exit.
Don’t worry as this action will only clear up the Java event log and not your phones stored files (like music, pictures or videos).
2. Delete Unused Languages : Your BlackBerry came with several languages that you can set your phone to. Although you could one of the hundreds speaking two or more foreign languages, it is quite likely that you’d rather just keep your phone in the English mode. Keeping the other unused languages on your phone is definitely a waste of space.
How to do: While on the home screen, select the Setup Wizard. Select Languages. Choose the Language that you want to keep on your BlackBerry and click Next. The phone will automatically delete the unchecked languages on the list.
3. Battery Pull: Although the famous QuickPull App is available to download for free in the App World. There’s nothing quite like doing the act itself: Pulling the battery out. Its quite easy to do as you just slide off the back cover, and gently pull out the phone’s battery pack. Leave it like that for about 20-30 secs and then put the battery back in.
However, if you think doing this can be tedious, and downloading the QuickPull for BlackBerry will take some memory space on the phone, you can always do a soft reset by holding down the ALT + Right SHIFT KEY + DEL all at the same time. Release the keys once the LED indicator flashes a Red Light. This will then reboot the BlackBerry phone.
4. Security Options: *Please note that this is not the same as the Security Wipe. Security Wipe brings back the BlackBerry to its Factory Settings when all your date, files, contacts, are deleted, hence, the term WIPE.
Security Options simply deletes sensitive data on the phone including your clipboard.
How to do: Go to Options — Security Options — Memory Cleaning. You can also set a shortcut of this option to create an icon directly in the home screen.
5. Close/ Exit Unused Running Applications in the Background: Leaving unused applications running in the background can slow down the processor speed. There could be a game you left open to read that BBM, or a website you were visiting left to send out an email. These multiple applications that have been left open, or running, can surely affect the phones performance. So how do we close them down?
How to do: Wherever you are on your handset–whether on the Home Screen, the email page, in the middle of a game, etc, etc– long press (hold down) the Menu (BlackBerry) key, until the background fades out and a set of icons appear. The icons that will appear are the running applications. Simply choose the app you’d like to close down, press the Menu key, and hen choose exit or close.
In addition to those tips, there are applications available in the App World to help improve the phone’s speed and performance.
The free ones include:
–QuickPull for BlackBerry: simulates the battery pull, which was explained earlier
–RAM Optimizer: works in the background by automatically recovering lost memory, which is then assigned to running applications for faster performance.
The paid ones are Memory Booster (RAM Optimizer) and BeJoose Memory Booster.
You can try any of the tips above and see how they improve your phone’s performance. Maybe you can also place some comments below and tell us how those techniques have changed your phones speed.
